If you follow our website or social media regularly, you are probably aware that we have a pretty strict “no chain” policy when we travel. We love using Yelp! or recommendations from people we meet to find the most random, hole-in-the-wall eating establishments.

So you might be surprised to learn that on our major cross-country trip, Whataburger was a non-negotiable stop!

We, unfortunately, live in a part of the country (Charlotte) that doesn’t have the chain. However, my husband spent a year living in Texas and fell in love with their menu. On one of our first trips as a married couple, Brent made sure to take me to Whataburger so I’d know what I’d been missing out on my whole life.

Naturally, we couldn’t wait to expose our children to such fabulous food. And, as we imagined, they loved it as much as we do!

In case you aren’t familiar, here’s a little background:

  • The first Whataburger opened back in 1950 in Corpus Christi, Texas. The founding goal was to serve a burger so big it took two hands to hold.
  • Every burger is made to order (which I experienced first hand since I don’t eat Gluten so needed to request mine without a bun!) The extras that come with your burger can include bacon, cheese, pickles and- our favorite- grilled jalapeños.
  • Despite the enormous growth, Whataburger remains privately owned and operated. There are now more than 820 restaurants across 10 states.
  • Most locations are open 24/7, 365 days a year.

Whataburger is the ultimate road trip stop!

In fact, it’s such an ultimate stop the kids insisted on eating it 3 times so far on our trip (and they would eat it every day if we let them!)

Our favorite thing on the menu is the Jalapeño And Cheese Whataburger, but honestly you can’t go wrong with anything! We also tried the Limited Edition Buffalo Ranch Chicken Sandwich (excellent) and The Avocado Bacon Burger. Onion rings are a must regardless.

The worst part about visiting Whataburger is having to decide what to order.

My kids thoroughly enjoyed their Justaburgers (with cheese) kids meals. And, they got a kick out of the name. They spent the entire meal- every time we visited- taking a bite and exclaiming “What A Burger!” For them, it never got old. I can’t swear the other people in the restaurant weren’t at least a little amused!

We are already looking forward to our next Whataburger experience!
