For many years Charleston received the coveted title as “Top City in the United States.” However, recently it has been named the top city in the world! I can’t say that I disagree with this title.
Our family finds Charleston to be pretty fabulous!
For anyone thinking about visiting the city for the first time, there is one very important thing I need to say. It’s not the beach. Yes, it’s located on the coast of South Carolina. And yes, the whole city has fabulous views of the water. But, I repeat, it is not the beach.
Here’s what Charleston IS… rich history, great food, impressive landmarks, southern charm, gorgeous sunsets, and cobblestone streets.
You can’t visit without learning something about the past. Or without overindulging in delicious seafood. And, chances are good you’ll leave town with a little southern drawl.
In other words, Charleston will charm you!
For my fellow beach lovers, rest assured that you have nearby options. My top five favorites are all within a 30 minute drive of downtown. They include: Kiawah Island, Isle of Palms, Folly Beach, Seabrook Island and Sullivan’s Island.
However, as long as you don’t go to Charleston thinking you’re heading to the beach- you may find yourself with so many things to do that you won’t even miss it!
Our family looks at Charleston as an adventure. There are hidden gems to be found everywhere. We explore. And I don’t think we’ve ever visited and NOT learned something.
Here are our favorite things to do when visiting this top city:
- Angel Oak Tree
- Fort Sumter National Monument (*Don’t forget your Passport To Your National Parks for this one!)
- Rainbow Row
- City Market
- South Carolina Aquarium
- Waterfront Park
- USS Yorktown CV10
- Old South Historic Carriage Tour
- Center For Birds of Prey
- Sugarbake Shop
